30 Years of CERM

Celebrating 30 Years of CERM

This year, CERM proudly celebrates 30 years of engineering and program management excellence. What began as a vision between two childhood friends in 1995, has grown into one of the largest minority-owned, professionally licensed, environmental, engineering, and program management firms in the Southeastern United States.

“When we started CERM, we wanted to create sustainable opportunities and drive meaningful change in our community,” said Al Edwards, CERM Co-Founder & CEO. “Thirty years later, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, the communities we’ve impacted, and the relationships we’ve built. Marcus’ legacy lives on in the foundation of this company.”

From a Shared Vision to a Lasting Legacy

CERM’s story began with Al Edwards and late co-founder, Marcus Reese, when the two met in Prichard, Alabama’s Mattie T. Blount High School through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Student Aid program. That early exposure to engineering and infrastructure shaped their vision for what would eventually become CERM. Together, they built more than just a business, they built a mission.

Growth Through Meaningful Projects

CERM’s journey has been shaped by the transformational projects that have propelled the firm’s expansion across multiple industries and geographies.

  • Metro Atlanta: From CERM’s early work on the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Fifth Runway and at Atlantic Station, to recent milestones like the newly commissioned DeKalb County Snapfinger Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion and the Westside Park and reservoir (Recently renamed to honor Mayor Shirley Franklin), the firm has played a critical role in shaping Atlanta’s infrastructure.
  • Mobile, AL: Rooted in the hometown of the founders, CERM has been deeply involved in the city’s economic and infrastructure development, supporting nationally awarded environmental redevelopment projects and strengthening partnerships in the Gulf region.
  • Tampa & Orlando, FL: Expanding its footprint, CERM has contributed to aviation, transportation, and environmental projects throughout northern and central Florida, furthering its impact in the Southeast.

Built on Relationships, Resilience & Legacy

CERM’s ability to adapt and grow in an ever-changing industry has been key to its success. Through strategic partnerships and a commitment to excellence, the firm has remained a leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions while staying true to its core values.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also take time to honor the legacy of Diometra Aldridge, CERM’s late Director of Corporate Strategy. Her leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication played an integral role in shaping CERM’s culture and strategic direction. Her contributions continue to guide us as we expand our reach, strengthen our team, and invest in the next generation of industry leaders.

A Commitment to Community & the Future

Beyond project delivery, CERM remains deeply committed to workforce development and mentorship. Through initiatives like the CERM Job Shadowing Program, the firm has provided hands-on learning opportunities for high school and college students, exposing them to careers in engineering, environmental science, and construction management.

This dedication led to the creation of the CERM Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit focused on expanding educational and career opportunities forunderrepresented students in STEM fields. As part of this mission, CERM established a scholarship program to support aspiring professionals and partnered with local technical colleges to enhance their certification programs, helping to close workforce gaps and equip students with the skills needed to succeed in the industry.

A Lasting Impact

As we look ahead, CERM remains committed to innovation, collaboration, and making a lasting difference. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.

Here’s to the next 30 years and beyond!
